While Elon Musk might have taken a legal loss last week (with a judge ordering that Twitter’s lawsuit against him should go to trial) he is still holding strong in the court of public opinion, according to a new study conducted by The Harris Poll on behalf of Ad Age.

Two-fifths (41%) of those aware of Twitter’s Board of Directors’ decision to sell the social media platform to Elon Musk think Elon Musk should win the lawsuit between himself and Twitter. Only a third (35%) think Twitter should win the lawsuit.

However, Twitter usage seems to impact opinions on who should win the lawsuit between Musk and Twitter. Two in five (42%) of Twitter users aware of the platform’s potential sale (and 49% of daily users) think Twitter should win the lawsuit between the social media platform and Musk.

That said, most Twitter users think the platform attracts bots more than other social media sites (which is one of Musk’s central arguments for dissolving the sale agreement). Over half (55%) of Twitter users (and 60% of daily users) agree that there are more bot accounts on Twitter than on other social media platforms.

This survey was conducted online in the United States by The Harris Poll on behalf of Ad Age from July 22, 2022 to July 25, 2022 among 1,076 respondents. Figures for age, sex, race and ethnicity, education, region, household income, and propensity to be online have been weighted where necessary to bring them into line with their actual proportions within the US population. Respondents for this survey were selected from a pool of potential respondents who have agreed to participate in The Harris Poll’s online research. For this study, the sample data is accurate to within +/- 4.0 percentage points using a 95% confidence level. For more information, please contact Madelyn Franz, or Andrew Laningham.
