In a survey conducted by The Harris Poll, American small businesses conveyed confidence in the interdependent relationship with their communities and employees, while revealing their underlying fears of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Business owners feel a sense of responsibility for the well-being of their customers and employees. The pandemic highlighted the interconnectedness of these groups, and their mutual need for one another.
Many business owners voiced concern that their doors would permanently close if strict COVID restrictions lingered. While businesses pivoted systems and processes to survive, the “new normal” remains uncertain.

This survey was conducted online within the United States by The Harris Poll from March 23-24, 2020 among 310 U.S. small business owners ages 18 and older. Small business owners are defined as owners/co-owners or franchisee/franchise owners of a company in the U.S. with fewer than 100 employees. Results align with the population of small businesses on company size. This online survey is not based on a probability sample and therefore no estimate of theoretical sampling error can be calculated.
